  Dysport

  What is Dysport™?
Dysport™ is a new injectable treatment for wrinkles made from the same neurotoxin (botulinum toxin type A) as Botox. Dysport™ has been used to smooth wrinkles in Europe and South America for several years. It was originally developed in the 1990s to treat neuromuscular disorders. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Dysport™ for use in the United States for the treatment of wrinkles between the eyebrows.

How does Dysport™ work?
Like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport™ temporarily immobilizes the muscles that cause facial wrinkles and frowns. Dysport™ diffuses a bit farther than BOTOX® Cosmetic from the injection point: one to three centimeters compared to BOTOX® Cosmetic’s one centimeter. This means that fewer injections are needed, but it also means that skilled cosmetic physicians such as Dr. Goldberg and his professional staff should perform the injections to ensure that the drug does not spread to nearby muscles and cause eyelid and/or eyebrow drooping or other unwanted side effects.

How long does the treatment last?

Dysport™’s results begin to appear within one to seven days of treatment, with day three being the average. Dysport™ contains less protein than BOTOX® Cosmetic, which means the body might break it down more slowly and the results may last longer. At a minimum, like BOTOX® Cosmetic, the results last up to four months.

Can Dysport™ be used to treat the same conditions as BOTOX® Cosmetic?

Yes. Dysport™ can be used to treat wrinkle lines in the forehead and around the eyes, drooping of the corners of the mouth, as well as prominent neck bands or cords, lines in the upper lips and chin rippling. Dysport™ injections can also be used for the treatment of excess sweating of the palms, soles, and armpits.

  Are there any side effects?

Possible side effects are similar to those of BOTOX® Cosmetic: temporary pain and bruising at the injection site. If you would like to learn more, Dr. Goldberg and his staff would be happy to discuss at length the potential benefits and side effects of Dysport™.
